Learning from darts

Playing darts and snooker improves numeracy.

The governing bodies of both darts and snooker in the UK are backing a scheme to encourage youngsters to take up the sports in order to improve their numeracy.  Participants of both sports tend to develop much better than average ability in manipulating numbers.

Leyland-brand-shot.jpgWhilst it may not be idea to overly encourage young boys, because it does tend to be a male sport, to spend excessive hours in snooker clubs, the educational gain may make it worth the risk.  Numeracy is at an all time low amongst young teens and a failure to grasp the basics at this age can lead to a lifetime of under performance.

For reasons beyond my comprehension, what used to be called "adding up and taking away" when I was at school, now appears to be mathematics. We talk about grade inflation but this is just crazy.

Anyway, good thinking from the darts and snooker communities and I would interested in feed back.

It is quite interesting watching big burly dart players who have such a good grasp of subtracting from 501 and also working out their exits. It does show what practice does for the brian.
