The Harry Potter series of has encouraged children and their parents to actually read books.
Because the book comes out before the film, there is competition between children to be first and hence read rather than have to wait to watch. This is a major result for education and a generation of children may have cause to thank authoress J K Rowling.
Reading brings multiple benefits, it encourages imagination as the reader superimposes his own impression and images on the written words. The fact that a subsequent film director may bring a different view simply complements the reader's initial impression and encourages them in their interpretation of future episodes.
